5-Hydroxy-2-Methylfurfural from Sugar Beet Thick Juice: Kinetic and Modeling Studies

5-Hydroxy-2-methylfurfural (HMF) has a high derivatization potential and is considered the sleeping giant of biobased platform chemicals. It accessible by acid hydrolysis various carbohydrate-containing feeds, preferably those in fructose content. We here report detailed study on use thick juice, an intermediate sucrose (SUC)-rich stream sugar factory, pure SUC for synthesis HMF batch reactor setup [in presence water sulfuric (0.01 M) at 180 °C]. Distinct differences reactivity were found both related to impurities (i.e., organic acids salts) juice.
